4th battalion shoulder title

23rd Battalion (4th Tyneside Scottish) Northumberland Fusiliers

The 4th battalion was officially authorised by the War Office on the 16th November 1914 although recruiting had continued even after the completion of the 3rd battalion. As early as the 12th November 400 men had already been carried over. As a result by 17th November Sir Thomas Oliver announced that the battalion and therefore the Tyneside Scottish Brigade were complete. The battalion arrived in France with the rest of the Brigade in January 1916 and took part in the battle of the Somme and the battle of Arras in 1917.

The battalion was reduced to cadre on 17th June 1918 and was part of the 197th Brigade near Aumale when thewar finally ended.
